Four Keys to Choosing the Right Solar Installer
Installing solar in your home is an exciting proposition, but also one that requires careful planning and execution. One of the most important decisions is deciding which installer to choose. The following are four keys to help you make a decision that will result in a long term successful installation.
- Go Local: Selecting a local installer will help ensure they are licensed to install in your area, and that they are aware of local restrictions as well as rebates and credits.
- Emphasize Reputation: While there may be some advantage with going with the lowest bid, in the long run you will be happier by going with a reputable supplier. Find out how long they have been in business. They should be certified by the NABCEP and willing to provide a number of references.
- Independence: Some installers use sub-contractors. This increases the risk of a poor installation. Make sure your installer does his own work. Secondly, some installers only use a single brand. This reduces your choices and limits their ability to provide you with the best product. A reputable supplier should also provide a warranty of 5 to 10 years.
- Price: Get multiple bids on your installation. They should provide all aspects of the purchase decision, including information on rebates and tax incentives, which can be available from your local utility, as well from local and state government. Some installers are willing to do the legwork on obtaining these for you, which can cover up to 50% of the cost.
By doing a little homework up front, you can save yourself headaches in the long run.
